A Values Worksheet That Ends in Action
Most values worksheets stop at the list: write your values, feel briefly noble, lose the paper. This values worksheet is built backwards from the last blank — one action you can take this week. Every section before it exists to make that final sentence specific and honest: your top five values, the reason each one earned its place, where the value is already alive in your routine, and where it is starving.
The five sections follow the arc used in coaching conversations. Naming (section one) establishes vocabulary. Meaning (section two) protects the list from fashions — a value you can justify survives a busy quarter; one you copied does not. Evidence (section three) and gap (section four) put your real calendar and your real values side by side. Action (section five) converts the comparison into a step small enough to actually happen.
Fill the values worksheet in directly on this page — fields autosave to your browser, so nothing is lost to a slipped connection or a closed tab. When you print, the worksheet keeps your answers, drops every button, and adds a clean header, so the paper version reads like a proper one-page reflection document.
How to Identify Your Core Values First
A values worksheet works best when the top five are already earned, not guessed. Two roads lead there. The fast road: run the three-minute values sort, select and rank, and copy your top five into section one. The thorough road: the values card sort, where all 52 cards pass through your hands and the narrowing step does the prioritizing for you. People who dislike choosing altogether can take the values assessment and let 24 statements do the inference.
Whichever road you take, one rule improves every values worksheet: write values as single words or short phrases (integrity, not being-a-good-person-who-keeps-promises). Single words are comparable, rankable, and memorable — which matters in section four, when you scan a week against five of them.
What if my list feels wrong a month later?
Good — that is the values worksheet doing its job. Values shift with seasons of life. Print a fresh copy, note the date on it, and repeat the exercise. Comparing two dated values worksheets six months apart is one of the cheapest forms of honest self-review available.
How to Use This Worksheet Well
The values worksheet takes fifteen focused minutes. Four habits make those minutes count:
- Write for yourself, not an audience. Nobody grades this values worksheet; vagueness only cheats you.
- Use concrete nouns in section three — names, places, rituals. Concrete evidence is checkable later.
- Keep one gap per value in section four. Listing every imperfection turns the values worksheet into a guilt inventory.
- Make section five embarrassingly small. One call, one block of time in the calendar, one no. Small and done beats grand and pending.
For coaches and facilitators
The values worksheet doubles as a session handout: clients complete a card sort with you, then fill sections two through four as take-home reflection. The printed worksheet gives the next session a shared starting point, and the dated pages build a portfolio of the client's development over a coaching engagement.
Review rhythm
Revisit your values worksheet monthly: reread section five — did the action happen? Quarterly: re-score section three and four against the current calendar. Every six to twelve months: print a fresh copy and check whether the top five still hold.
